This private kayaking and hiking day tour from Sitka begins with paddling through the waters of the Causeway Islands. Then, step ashore for a guided trek as you travel back into history to discover lost forts and relics left behind from World War II and the important role Sitka played during the second World War.
Set out on a leisurely guided paddle by kayak as you navigate with your guide through Sitka’s picturesque harbor, home to one of the most productive commercial fishing fleets in North America. Pause near Sitka’s decommissioned Naval Base where your guides will recount stories a about Sitka’s very important role defending Pacific sea lanes and the West Coast during World War II.
After you have settled into your own paddling rhythm, head out past the breakwater to explore the wilder side of Sitka Sound. Be amazed by the abundance of colorful marine life that inhabits the intertidal zone and kelp forests that fringe the coast. With bald eagles watching over you from the trees, it is almost certain you will encounter other wild neighbors: curious harbor seals, massive Stellar sea lions, and perhaps a few playful sea otters. Occasionally, you can also spot humpback, minke, and orca whales.
At the Causeway Islands, step ashore to explore the remains of a WWII-era fort, which had been abandoned as hastily as it had been built. While exploring moss-covered bunkers and fern-rimmed gun emplacements, feel the healing power of the surrounding rainforest as you absorb peaceful, lush surroundings. Enjoy a snack on the beach as your guide shares a few stories, before starting your paddle back to Sitka.
